e23 chronicles the OVNI adventure Day 1: Departure, or, The Disorganized Get Ready Errands didn't finish until about 4pm MST. We couldn't figure out where the car rental place was, and ended up accidentally driving to Kansas in the meanwhile searching for it. Best part was, got to see a cow getting abducted in a field somewhere outside Denver International Airport. Drove up to Ft. Collins where we did the last of our shopping--2 metal carrying cases for my Tascam US-428 and dev's VCR. Had a burrito the size of a loaf of bread at Qdoba before high-tailin' it up to Cheyenne, where the road was all phuckered up as usual. Stopped briefly in Laramie to gas up and chat with BK who was still in Boston. (We were all coming off the frantic pace of our last few days at our 'real' jobs where panic had set in with our co-workers. BK would later comment that "competency is sometimes mistaken for brilliance," and that certainly held true from our experiences as our co-workers breathlessly held us up with questions.) Took about 9 hours to get to Salt Lake City. Why did this city end up here? Did someone foresee the great profitable salt factories? Whatever the case, Salt Lake's highway exit system plays some tricky games on its travelers--unobtrusively winding unsuspecting drivers back towards the city at every opportunity. Fending off this Twilight Zone-ish anxiety, we made haste out of Salt Lake, stopping at a Flying J truck stop just outside of the city, of the Great Salt Lake, on the way to the barren salt flats. There, we had our first "kitchen of future's past" experience with Tammy, our talkative down-home waitress. After a greasy meal of eggs and toast, I explained to Tammy that dev and I were kitchen designers on our way to a conference in San Francisco, and that we were taking pictures of all the kitchens of the restaurants we ate at along our journey. So, unsuspectingly, she let us take some snaps of her behind-the-scenes environ, and we got the cook on duty to snap a coup le of me and dev with talky Tammy. "She probably thinks we're gay," dev posited.
